The Villanova Archaeological Civic Museum of Verucchio

The Villanova Archaeological Civic Museum of Verucchio, opened in 1985 and located inside the old Augustinian Monastery, houses and exhibits almost all the archaeological finds discovered at the foot of the rock in the Sixties. The exhibition is arranged in order to underline the various typologies of the finds and the chronological development of the Villanova Culture, which dates back to the early Iron Age (IX – VI cent. B.C.). In the Museum are exhibited funerary paraphernalia of an exceptional beauty and immense historical and artistic value, uncommonly extremely well preserved and generally considered of international importance, which have been found in the hundreds of  burials, grouped in four main burial-grounds and some small ones, discovered along the years. The Museum exhibits biconical cinerary urns exquisitely decorated,  jewels, fabrics of coloured wool, amber, weapons and rare wooden artefacts like tables and even a throne, unique finds preserved  because of  the ground’s chemical composition. The finds, besides their enormous scientific value, amaze with their artistic elegance and testify the high degree of Villanova Culture’s development, which, in this expression, shows peculiarities that make it possible to define it “Culture of Verucchio”.
