The Gambalunga Public Library

The Gambalunga Public Library, leaved in 1619 by Alessandro Gambalunga to the Municipality of Rimini, has been the third public library opened in Italy, after the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan (1609), and the Biblioteca Angelica in Rome (1614). Since 1619 the Gambalunga Public Library has been a real public library, that is, not only open to the public, but also under public management, differing from the Ambrosiana and Angelica Libraries. At the moment of the testamentary donation the Gambalunga Public Library contained about 2,000 volumes, treating of the most various topics, as jurisprudence, theology, history, philosophy, astronomy and astrology, including volumes of literature and  scientific treatises. Today it offers more than 200,000 volumes, the number being constantly increased by new acquisitions. Very precious and of inestimable cultural value are the rare antique books preserved in the Gambalunga Public Library, among which are worth mentioning the 394 volumes printed  from the mid-1400 to 1500, called incunabula, the 5,000 volumes printed in the sixteenth century, the 40,000 volumes preceding the nineteenth century, and the approximately 1,300 codes, manuscripts leaved by Alessandro Gambalunga himself or collected and preserved thanks to learned librarians and donations by generous benefactors.
