The Territorial Museum
In the noteworthy Territorial Museum of Riccione, today
housed in the Weighing Cultural
Center,
are exhibited, besides numerous fossils, minerals, and
archaeological finds, interesting environmental reconstructions. The Museum
is divided into six sections:
1) Origin and Evolution of Life: in this section the
origin and the evolution of life on earth are described through evocative
environmental reconstructions illustrating the various geologic eras and the
evolution of mankind from the Australopithecus africanus to
the Homo sapiens sapiens. It is also possible to admire numerous
fossils coming from many foreign countries.
2) Geologic Evolution of The Territory: in this section
the territory geologic evolution is illustrated by a relief model and some
rocks, fossils and minerals coming from the most important geologic
formations of the Conca valley and the surrounding territory.
3) The
Quaternary Period in the Conca Valley: the section concerning the Quaternary
period, that is to say, the period during which mankind appeared on earth,
opens with a reconstruction of the Conca valley basin during the last but
one Riss glaciation, and a noteworthy prehistoric bison. It is also worth
seeing the skeletons of rhinoceroses, elephants, and bears which lived about
200 thousand years ago together with prehistoric men, who manufactured some
Palaeolithic scrapers, arrow points, and splinters in exhibition.
4) The Neolithic and Copper Ages: in the interesting
section dedicated to the Neolithic and Copper ages it is possible to admire
handworks carved in obsidian, flintstone and bone, personal adornments,
vases and ritual objects found in the first permanent settlements of the
surrounding territory.
5) The Bronze and Iron Ages: in the section dedicated to
the Bronze and Iron ages it is possible to admire noteworthy archaeological
finds, as bronze daggers and fibulae, and finely decorated pottery, found in
prehistoric villages scattered in the surrounding territory. Numerous Celtic
and Greek archaeological finds are also exhibited in this section.
5) The Roman Age: in the sixth and last section
concerning the Roman conquest and colonisation of the territory of Riccione,
are exhibited numerous archaeological finds, among which are deserving of
