Palaeontology Museum
In the Palaeontology Museum of Mondaino, housed in the
Malatesta fortress, it is possible to admire an interesting collection with
fossils found in and around Mondaino, exhibited in a fine reconstruction of
their ancient environment. This noteworthy collection includes as much as 21
species of fish, rare fossilized feathers and bird wings dating back to the
Miocene period – from about 26 to 5 million years ago – whose traces are
exceptionally clear. It is also possible to admire striking shark teeth, and
in particular the ones belonging to the Procarcharodon megalodon, the
biggest shark existing ever since the world begun. Some collections of
fossils coming from neighbouring localities or even from foreign countries,
and some Roman stele are also exhibited.
