MONUMENTS RIMINI

The Suggestum Caesaris

In 50 B.C. Julius Caesar, saying “iacta alea est”, that is, “the die is cast”, crossed the Rubicon river and took up quarters with the Legio XIII at Rimini, which become the advanced base for the first operations against Pompey. The importance of this event, that has left a clear memory even in the present inhabitants of Rimini, has been so great that the Humanists invented two documents related to it: the Decretum Rubiconis (the Rubicon Decree) and the Suggestum Caesaris, an inscription containing the presumed speech Caesar held in the forum of Rimini to enlist volunteers in his army, which today stands in Piazza Tre Martiri (Historical centre), at the end of Via IV Novembre.
