The Statue of Pope Paul V

The statue of Pope Paul V stands in Piazza della Fontana, the present-day Piazza Cavour. The statue was initiated by Nicolas Cordieri in1611 and terminated by Sebastiano Sebastiani in 1613. In 1797, on the occasion of the quartering of the French soldiers in Rimini and of the visit to the city by Napoleon, received as a guest by the marquis Gian Maria Belmonti on February, 6th, the statue of Pope Paul V was transformed - by removing the pontifical insigna and by erasing the dedicatory epigraph - in the statue of St Gaudentius, the patron of Rimini.  In 1940 the statue was restored in its original appearance.
