San Giovanni in Compito Parish Church
It is
worth visiting the magnificent Parish Church of San Giovanni in Compito,
which stands about two kilometers from Savignano sul Rubicone, at a
cross-roads between the Via Emilia and a road which in ancient times led to
the coast and connected with the ancient Via Regina, in an area, mentioned
in historical documents dating back to the VII century, in which many
archaeological finds, which attest its importance as compitum
(cross-roads) since Roman age, have been brought to light. The parish
church, which still preserves its original structure, is attested as parish
church in a parchment from Ravenna datable to 995. Until the early twelfth
century the Parish Church of San Giovanni in Compito was the head of the
territories of
Savignano, S. Mauro, Gatteo,
Gambettola, Montiano, Longiano, and Montalbano, in spite of the presence,
just about a hundred meters from it, of the Church of San Pietro, attested
as parish church since 1120.
