The
Roman Theater
Until few
decades
ago the existence of a Roman
theater
in the city of Rimini was known only from a note to the Divine Comedy
by Benvenuto Rimbaldi from Imola. The ruins of the Roman
theater
of Rimini have been identified in the Sixties. The Roman
theater,
built during the principate of Augustus, stood in a central area of the
city, that is, it was in an insula situated in the north-west of the
forum, in the area circumscribed by the present Giordano Bruno Street
– Tempio Malatestiano Street – Mentana Street and Corso d’Augusto
(Augustus’ Avenue). The
theater,
which was a brickwork, had a semicircular cavea, which had a diameter
of about 80 meters and bore the tiers for the audience. Inside it there
was a covered ambulatory that could be travelled over, while the exterior
had presumably superimposed arches, like the usual typology shows. The stage
building, today partly covered by the ruins of Lettimi Palace, sumptuously
decorated with marble, was several meters high. Of the ancient
theater’s
splendour remain today only a marble pillar and some marble mouldings.
