MONUMENTS RIMINI

The Miliaria

During the Roman age  roads were used for the moving of people and armed forces, for the carriage of   goods and for the postal service.  Numerous places of  rest along the lay-out of the roads, and the itineraria, ancient topographic maps, on which the distances and the places were indicated, made the journey easier. Moreover, a miliarium,  that is, a stone, usually cylindrical, with or without an inscription indicating the distance, stood  beside the road every mile. A miliarium is still in situ beside the state road called Flaminia, in Miramare, a quarter of  Rimini. Another one is in S. Giustina. Two miliaria from the small town of Misano are now in the epigraphic section of  Rimini’s Municipal Museum.
