The Malatesta
Temple Dedication
Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta ordered to engrave a dedication in ancient
Greek on the lateral pillars of the façade of the Malatesta Temple,
dedicated to God and the city of Rimini. The inscription sounds: “Sigismondo
Pandolfo Malatesta, son to Pandolfo Malatesta, who escaped numerous and
extremely grave dangers during the italic war, peace-bearer with the
enterprises accomplished with fortune and merit, dedicated to the memory of
such enterprises to our everlasting God and to the City this Temple. Bearing
with noble heart the enormous expenses, he raised a noble and sacred
monument.” The dedication confirms, with the recurrent reappearance in the
Malatesta Temple of Sigismondo’s personal symbol SI, which some Scholars
consider Sigismondo’s initials, and others the initials of his name and of
the name of his wife Isotta degli Atti, his pride for the construction of
the superlative monument and his nexus with the city of Rimini.
