Saint Gaudenzio’s Church

During the archaeological excavations completed some years ago in the spot where now stands the old Sport Hall, along the Flaminia Street, not far from the Arch of Augustus, were found a Roman necropolis and some structures referable to a religious edifice. The Scholars have dubiously identified this edifice with the Church of  Saint Gaudenzio, patron of Rimini,  which was built in the IV century. According to an old tradition, during the first years of the IV century, many Christians received the palm of  martyrdom nearby the Arch of Augustus, on the spot on which  afterwards was built an early Christian Church called Confessio Martyrum, that is, “Martyrs’ Confession”, later consecrated to Saint Gaudenzio.
